3-week Book Study: Encampment
“An activist priest provides sanctuary for an encampment of unhoused people in her churchyard near Kensington Market, Toronto. Known as an outspoken social justice activist, author Maggie Helwig has spent the last three years getting to know the residents and fighting tooth and nail to allow them to stay, battling various authorities that want to clear the yard. Encampment tells the story of Helwig’s life-long activism as preparation for her fight to keep her churchyard open to people needing a home. More importantly, it introduces us to some of the residents: their lives, their challenges, their humanity." (Adapted from publisher)
We will meet in person on three consecutive Tuesday evenings: March 3, 10 and 17, from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Kingsbury Room at the Runnymede Campus to discuss the book and issues raised by it. Leaders: Katrina Hall and Monica McGlynn-Stewart. To sign up or ask for more information, please email hall.katrina@outlook.com or see Monica at the sign-up table in Memorial Hall after church on Feb. 1, 15th or 22nd. You can purchase a book from Monica as well.
P.S. The book is under 200 pages long, an easy read on a complex topic.
PIE Day
Join us on Sunday, March 15 for a special service featuring reflections shared by members of our congregation. Following the service, everyone is invited to stay and enjoy pie together.
