Forgetting: What's Normal, What's Not, and When to Pay Attention
What kinds of forgetting are normal as we age? When should we pay attention? And how does memory actually work in everyday life?
Join us for a thoughtful and accessible evening conversation with Dr. Bill Hockley, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and longtime memory researcher:
Forgetting: What’s Normal, What’s Not, and When to Pay Attention
Dr. Hockley will explore common experiences of memory and aging, including:
• normal age-related memory changes
• why some things feel familiar but hard to retrieve
• how memory changes over time
• when changes may deserve closer attention
The evening will include a presentation, moderated discussion, audience questions, and dessert and refreshments afterward in a relaxed community setting.
Attendees will also receive a practical take-home resource booklet with information on:
• simple ways to support safety and independence at home
• planning living spaces with aging in mind
• community resources related to memory and aging

How can the Runnymede United Church community find its way forward through meaningful actions of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples?
How can we develop relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations to seek guidance and partnership for our reconciliation journey?
What is The United Church of Canada doing about reconciliation now, and what has changed since the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission?
What approach should be used to reach out to other Runnymede United Church members to join or lead this journey?
You are invited to an after-worship conversation about reconciliation on Sunday, June 14th, 12:00pm - 1:15pm in the Kingsbury Room.
Facilitator: Lori Ransom, Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice Animator at the General Council office.
All are welcome. We hope you will be part of this important conversation.

3-week Book Study: Encampment
“An activist priest provides sanctuary for an encampment of unhoused people in her churchyard near Kensington Market, Toronto. Known as an outspoken social justice activist, author Maggie Helwig has spent the last three years getting to know the residents and fighting tooth and nail to allow them to stay, battling various authorities that want to clear the yard. Encampment tells the story of Helwig’s life-long activism as preparation for her fight to keep her churchyard open to people needing a home. More importantly, it introduces us to some of the residents: their lives, their challenges, their humanity." (Adapted from publisher)
We will meet in person on three consecutive Tuesday evenings: March 3, 10 and 17, from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Kingsbury Room at the Runnymede Campus to discuss the book and issues raised by it. Leaders: Katrina Hall and Monica McGlynn-Stewart. To sign up or ask for more information, please email hall.katrina@outlook.com or see Monica at the sign-up table in Memorial Hall after church on Feb. 1, 15th or 22nd. You can purchase a book from Monica as well.
P.S. The book is under 200 pages long, an easy read on a complex topic.
